We use sheet music for most of our repertoire but occasionally you will be expected to learn a song from memory. Don't panic - here are a few strategies that will help!

  • Learn the music first and then the lyrics
  • Sing along with the practice audio track (without looking at the words!)
  • 'Map' the song. Break it down into sections
  • Memorize the first line of a verse or a chorus - you'll be surprised how easily the next lines will follow on!
  • Use the rhymes at the end of lines as an anchor to learn the lyrics
  • Create a 'story' in your mind. If you know what the song is all about it will help you to learn it
  • Read the lyrics aloud
  • Write out the lyrics. You could even keep the sheet handy and refer to it now and then!
